Keeping skin clean, fresh, and oil-free during the summer isn’t the easiest thing to do. Our number one tip for removing excess oil—rinse your face with cold water. Good old H2O is a universal solvent and not only removes oil buildup, but rinses away environmental stressors and refreshes your complexion.
Still, all the water in the world can’t keep shine at bay unless you’re also using effective skincare products. We are in love with the new skincare line that Stila recently launched. The five piece Try-Me Set lets you test out each of the products that are perfect for oily skin:
Coming Clean Revitalizing Gel Cleanser is great for this time of year because it will remove excess oil without leaving your skin feeling dehydrated.
Glowing Reviews Gentle Skin Renewal Scrub gives a little extra cleaning for your skin. It’s perfect after a day at the beach or prior to self tanning.
Undercover Conditioning Toner & Moisture Prep removes excess oil and preps skin to take in moisture.
Face the Day Multi-use Moisturizing Gel Cream hydrates without being too heavy.
Light Source Spot Correcting & Brightening Serum is targeted for hyper-pigmentation and brightening, which can help prevent any unnecessary spots from peaking through the skin.
You should always wear sunscreen on your face, regardless of the season. But during the summer months, SPF is essential. Still, it can be a hassle to remember to slather it on every day. So instead of adding another product to your beauty routine, just make sure that your makeup has SPF 15 or higher. You’ll be automatically protecting your skin from the sun’s harsh rays every time you put on your makeup. Here are a couple of our fave products with SPF that are perfect for summertime.
Stila Hydrating Primer with SPF 30 is an amazing product to kickstart your beauty routine. It’s oil-free, fragrance free, and super light-weight so it won’t feel heavy on hot summer days.
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector with SPF 25 creates an ethereal glow and won’t leave skin looking too done up. It can be used as a primer/base or a highlighter to create subtle luminosity.
There is no excuse to ever run out of the house without makeup on. With a few quick tips, you can master a fresh looking face in less than five minutes:
Always wear sunscreen to protect your skin. To save time, use a primer, tinted moisturizer, or foundation that has SPF already in it. That said, tinted moisturizer is a great morning starter, since it’s sheer and you won’t look too made up. Add a little blush to give a pop of color to your skin. Cream blush makes your skin look dewy, while a powder formula tends to look heavier since it’s matte. Mascara is the one item you should never leave home without! A few coats on your upper lashes helps to brighten your eyes. Something as simple as filling in your eyebrows (pencil or powder) can help give you a defined look. Finish your quick and easy makeup routine with a swipe of tinted lip balm or sheer gloss.
On-the-Go makeup service is offered at Blushington Monday-Saturday for $20. The service includes tinted moisturizer as your base, powder, bronzer, blush (either choice), brows, mascara, and gloss!
By the end of a work day, your makeup definitely needs a refresher. And if you have a date, a girls' night out, or an after-work event, there are a few easy changes that can help make your existing makeup look bolder. Here’s how to easily go from a daytime look to an evening look—without starting over.
*Apply more powder to beat daytime shininess and ensure a flawless canvas for your evening makeup application.
*Sweep on some powder blush, to further tone down the all-day shine build-up. A little color on your cheeks can also help you look fresh and awake—even if you’re exhausted after a full day’s work.
* Eyeliner is a quick and easy way to darken your daytime look. We recommend black liner if you’re looking for an intense smokey look; brown/bronze liner is more subtle but still creates a bit of drama.
* Most of us wear gloss or subtle lipstick for work. For an evening, punch up your pout with a bold, bright color (think: coral or bright pink) and by layering the shade on with lipliner, lipstick, and gloss.
Which eyeliner is right for you—or appropriate for your occasion? There’s lots of options—pencil, liquid, and gel. Here’s how to choose the perfect liner look:
If you’re planning on attending a wedding or an occasion where tears might be shed. It will remain in place through the whole event and look flawless and precise. Our favorite liquid liners are Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Liner and Kevyn Aucoin Precision Liquid Liner.
If you want a more subtle daytime look. Pencil eyeliner is also a great option if you have more mature skin, since it looks more age appropriate and fresh. Our pick: Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner.
If you’re torn between the liquid eyeliner look and a soft pencil look! Gel liner is like a liquid in that it has good staying power—but you can smudge it like a pencil. Use it during the day smudged with just mascara. At night, add a little more at the lash line and blend it out for a more dramatic effect. One of our faves: Ultimate Creme Eyeliner by Becca.
July 4th is all about spending time with friends, relaxing and celebrating. Here's three ways to make your look reflect the holiday spirit, without putting silver stars on your lips!
Get Fresh Faced: Who wants to spend a lot of time putting on foundation and excess makeup when it will probably just sweat off from the heat? The Fourth of July is the perfect time to switch out foundation for a tinted moisturizer containing SPF. We highly recommend Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20 by Stila . It’s a sheer wash of color that gives nice coverage but doesn’t feel heavy.
Use HIghlighter or Bronzer: The holiday weekend is all about relaxing—and having the skin to prove it. A little highlighter or bronzer can make your skin simply glow! Also, opt out a dramatic smokey eye and go for a light, shimmery look instead. Instead of traditional shadow, try using highlighter or extra dewy bronzer. Jouer makes several gorgeous shades of cream highlighters which can be applied to the high points of skin. Stila Sun Highlighter creates beautiful, bronzy, beachy skin perfect for July 4th (and all summer long really).
Don a Patriotic Pout: Prove that you’re proud to be an American with crimson lip! Try Femme or Belle Noir Lipstick by Julie Hewett for that punch of July 4th red. Or for something more subtle, try Ultimate Color Gloss by Becca in the rich, red raspberry shade of Hotel California (a pretty bold/sheer red). All of these colors are great for most skin tones and simply scream, “Happy Fourth of July!”
There’s a fine line between a dewy, natural glow and looking too shiny. And while summer is filled with lots of fun things, oilier skin isn’t one of them. First rule to follow during the warmer months: Less is more. The less makeup you wear, the less you have to worry about getting oily and having to touch up throughout the day. Here’s some other ways to keep your skin from looking too slick this summer:
Start with matte primer. Primer can reduce the appearance of big pores and control shine by absorbing oil. We love Resurfacing Primer from Becca.
Opt for lighter consistency foundation. A tinted moisturizer isn’t as heavy as a traditional, thicker foundation. That means that when you do sweat, you won’t be locking in moisture under your makeup—which can make you look oilier than you actually are. Our fave: Matte Moisture Tint by Jouer.
Keep translucent powder with you. Perfect for absorbing extra oil, we love Ora Mineral Mix Loose Powder by Julie Hewett in Translucent Oat. It doesn’t look cakey; instead it gives your skin more of a satin finish. Going out and don’t want to carry a compact? Slide Mai Couture Papiers in your purse. About the size of a credit card, they go beyond traditional blotting papers by both removing excess oil as well as putting a bit of powder back on your face.
Whether you’re spending the holiday weekend at the beach or hitting a barbecue, these looks will help you kick off the summer season beautifully! We can totally hook you up with these lovely looks but if you can't make it in to see us in WeHo or Dallas, here are some tips on creating looks similar to these with some of our favorite products:

We highly recommend the Eye Shadow Trio in Bronze Glow by Stila for this look as well! For your lips, blend Nude Lip Liner in Fondant by Becca all over and finish with a swipe of Essential Lip Enhancer by Jouer.
To achieve a bronzed look like Gisele, start with Luminizing Moisture Tint by Jouer in a shade darker than your own. Then, with a shade that is a bit lighter use Compact Concealer by Becca to brighten specific areas. Apply Pure Powder Glow in Natura by Kevyn Aucoin Beauty all over your skin—concentrate it on your cheeks as a blush and dust lightly all over as a bronzer. Using a very soft touch, apply a bit of Shimmering Skin Perfector in Pearl by Becca to create a light glow. Fill your brows in with Brow Definer in Blond by Jouer. Use a stiff stroke to get a nice, strong brow. Finish with The Elegant Lip Gloss in Vesuvian by Kevyn Aucoin.
The nude lip is super sexy—especially during the warm summer months. But make no mistake—the nude lip isn’t a naked lip. To achieve that perfect bombshell glow, you have to find the right color nude for you. Here’s how to create the perfect summer pout.
Products we love: Nude Lip Liner Pencil in Nougat by Becca; The Elegant Lip Gloss in Vesuvian by Kevyn Aucoin
To apply: Using the lip liner’s creamy end, apply a little over your natural lip line blend it down until you can't see it. Using the opposite end, line your lips’ natural line. Next, apply the lip gloss using a lip brush and blend into your lip line.
Products we love: The Flesh-toned Lip Pencil in Medium by Kevyn Aucoin Beauty;
Beach Tint in Fig by Becca; Sheer Tint Lip Color in Estella by Becca
To apply: Sometimes you can look a little pale, if you don't go a little darker on the lip liner. By using a medium lip pencil you’ll get a more defined look. After lining your lips, blend a bit of the Beach Tint into the lip liner, but be sure to let the line show a little. Next, apply the Estella lipstick. Dab just in the center of your lips so end up with a ombre nude look.
Products we love: Bijou Lipstick in Biba by Julie Hewett
To apply: This is the perfect pink nude—no liner or gloss necessary! Just glide on and you’ll look like you just got kissed.
Nude for Darker Skin
Products we love: Smudge Stick Eyeliner in Lionfish by Stila (to be used as a lip pencil); Lip Glaze in Honeydew by Stila; concealer (any brand will do)
To apply: On darker skin, this eyeliner used as a lip liner is genius! It gives a little sparkle and slightly fades into the natural color of your skin. After lining, dab a little concealer on the center of your lips and blend out. Next, apply the lip glaze and blend all together for a beautiful, juicy nude lip.
