Skin Saving Tips for {Sweating} It Out!

Meeting for a yoga or spin class might as well be the new coffee date. More than ever, trendy girls like you are spending more time in the gym or working out with their besties than most other pre- or post-work activities. What that means for us? Sweaty skin solutions! We know you’re on the run, and don’t always have time to follow healthy skin and hair protocol, which is why we’ve searched for the best of the best on-the-go beauty products to keep your fresh all day (or at least help you fake it!).

1. We don’t care if you’re trying to impress your spin instructor, yoga teacher, or the towel boy at Equinox; makeup during a workout is an absolute no-no for clean and healthy skin! Makeup clogs pores, which in turn causes breakouts to occur. Even if you have to wait for the lights to go off to wipe your face, it’s better than nothing! Our go-to wipes are the Cleansing Spa Water Cloths by Koh Gen Do.

2. After a workout, it’s important to get your skin clean, and fast! Skin can breakout as a result of blocked pores, dirty pores excessive oil production, all of which are made worse by sweating. While you need not panic, make sure you’re taking steps to clean your face immediately after a hard cardio sesh or hot yoga class. For on-the-go cleanliness, Cetaphil Cleansing Cloths are just the ones to get the job done.

3. All over freshness is a must when you don’t have time for a full shower post-workout, which is why we always keep our Julie Hewett Pure Persian Rose Water on hand. This skin freshener not only smells like a day at the spa, but it also nourishes and hydrates skin for improved radiance. If you’re planning to put on makeup, this spray is a necessary step in setting your foundation and preventing the over-powdered look we all dread. Plus, you can grab this product from your closest Blushington location!

4. More moisture, please! One common downfall is allowing skin to sit after cleansing, without applying any serum or moisturizer. The problem? If skin stays bare, it can begin to dehydrate. Dry skin doesn’t make anyone happy, and sure doesn’t lead to an all-over glow. Make sure to keep your favorite moisturizer on-hand and apply once you’ve cleansed. Another quick trick? Leave it to supermom and supermodel Doutzen Kroes to have the inside scoop on skincare. Kroes opts for oxygen spray when she’s on the go. She uses the spray in place of moisturizer, which is especially helpful while travelling!

5. We know that feeling. You’ve had an intense workout and no matter how high you blast the a/c in your car, you simply can’t stop the perspiration on your face. And who can apply makeup in that condition? While a mineral powder or heavy foundation is out of the question, a tinted moisturizer might just be your answer. Our hands down, no questions asked, end of story go-to product is Jouer’s Moisture Tint, both in Luminizing and Matte finishes. These lightweight moisture tints even out imperfections and leave soon with a smooth finish, all with SPF to protect from UVA and UVB rays. Plus, they’re oil free, fragrance fre and hypoallergenic, so they won’t clog pores! Home. Run.

6. Your skin is fresh, you smell like roses, but what to do with that sweat-soaked hair?! This situation calls for a messy bun, high ponytail or low braid and STAT. Lucky for you, the darling founders behind Emi-Jay created the perfect hair tie, if you can even call it that. We prefer to refer to it as the perfect anywhere accessory, doubling as a wrist layering piece and perfect hair holding apparatus (okay maybe that’s a bit fancy, but hair tie just didn’t seem to do the product justice!).

After you’ve planked, squatted, and chaturanga’d your way through the day, be sure to follow these simple skin saving guidelines and no one will ever know you even broke a sweat!

Go With The {GLOW}: 5 Tips for Maintaining Glowing Skin While Transitioning Into Cooler Weather!

We get it, you worked all summer on that perfect glow and now it’s beginning to fade as the weather cools. Worse though than your tan becoming a few shades lighter is the dry and irritated skin that sometimes comes around once we start seeing pumpkin spice lattes on every corner. Because we are committed to your beauty (and health) from head to toe, we thought we’d check in with Dr. Nancy Samolitis, a board certified dermatologist and expert in all things beauty, to give us all the inside information for keeping your skin healthy and hydrated as we transition into fall and winter. Read below for a few of her expert recommendations: from keeping blemishes at bay to healing irritated skin, and everything in between. Take it away, doctor!

1. Even though we are transitioning from beach parties to cocktail parties, it is so important to wear sunscreen every day. Cumulative daily sun exposure builds up slowly, leading to signs of sun damage such as wrinkles, rough texture, and brown spots. Make sure your sunscreen is at least SPF 30 or higher and has broad spectrum coverage. Product recommendations: Elizabeth Arden Rx Triple Protection Factor SPF 50+, TIZO Facial Mineral Fusion SPF 40, Colorescience Sunforgettable Mineral Sunscreen Brush SPF 30.

2. Stress from school, work, and holiday planning can cause breakouts. Keep those pimples at bay with products that contain retinol, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide. Expert tip: it's more effective to treat the entire face or area of breakout than to spot treat. To quickly decrease redness before applying concealer to a pimple, try a drop of other redness relieving products like Afrin or Visine, a little ice, and a green tinted primer. Product recommendations: La Roche Posay Effaclar, Neutrogena All in 1 Acne Control Facial Treatment Lotion, Skin Medica Purifying Acne Wash.

3. Fall/winter is a great time to start reversing the damage done over the summer. Smooth texture by exfoliating daily with the Clarisonic brush (guess what, it helps your products sink in deeper too!). Brighten brown spots with ingredients like kojic acid and vitamin C. Product recommendations: Dermaceutic Spot Cream, Glytone Antioxidant Anti-Aging Serum, La Roche Posay Mela-D Dark Spot Correcting Serum.

4. Dry lips are very frustrating when you're smoothing on your fall berry and vampy lipsticks. Overnight, slather on Aquaphor Healing Ointment or Aveeno Skin Relief Healing Ointment (apply the residual on your cuticles!). Exfoliate gently with a sugar scrub such as Sara Happ Lip Scrub (yum) and prime with a matte balm like Avene Cold Cream Lip Balm. More extreme dry lips with redness, peeling or itching may need a few applications of 1% hydrocortisone ointment, but if you need it more than 2-3 days, see your dermatologist.

5. Dry, itchy skin always flares up when the weather cools. Lube up head to toe daily after a shower with a skin restoring moisturizer like Cerave or Cetaphil Restoraderm. For itchy patches, try Aveeno anti-itch creams containing oatmeal. Keep showers short and not too hot. Make sure your soap is also hydrating and contains no irritating fragrances.

We Like The Way You { WORK } It!

By now you’ve mastered the art of the smokey eye and the perfect pout. While these staples are a no-brainer for girls’ night out, dramatic makeup has no business in the workplace. Don’t let faux lashes or a glossy lip distract from your real talents at the office: your creativity, bright brain and killer instincts. Of course, you can’t let the daily grind take away all the fun, which is why we’ve highlighted the best ways to maintain your flawless features without overdoing it.

Put your best face forward while steering clear of a heavy hand. You don’t have the advantage of the ever-flattering candlelight at a restaurant or minimal club lighting, so heavy foundation formulas can head towards looking caked on. The same goes for fake-bake or self-tanner; leave it for the weekend. Instead, work on mastering a light glow with a sheer foundation or powder.

A little blush and bronzer never hurt anyone, especially when you want to revive your complexion from a late-night social event or even working overtime at the office. While a washed-out complexion doesn’t scream “bright-eyed and ready to take on the day,” going too heavy on the application can be a bit much for the office. Opt for neutral shades, like peach or light pink, or even a two-in-one highlighting/bronzing palette for a more even-toned look.

While a dramatic eye has no place at your desk, dull hues of beige shadow are too boring for a fashionista like you! Add an oh-so-chic hint of shimmer by opting for champagne or rose-gold colored shadow. Using these shades, you can steer clear of anything too bold or distracting while still elevating your more conservative office look.

To complete your eyes, keep it simple with a little liner and mascara. Switch things up with a subdued cateye paired with your neutral tones, or even try trading in your black liner for a deep brown or slate. These nearly black shades will lighten things up a bit without stepping too far outside of your comfort zone.

Who has time to continue reapplying makeup at the office? Not you. To avoid glossy finishes that require too much of your time, stick to rosy stains, pinkish tones, or nude shades to give you a classy, refined look. On days you feel like going bold, add a pop of color with a red lip and keep everything else neutral.

Now that you’ve got the ins and outs of work makeup on lock, you’re ready to go out there and knock ‘em dead!

{ F A L L } Glow Made Simple!

It’s about that time to trade in cutoffs and flip-flops for light layers and leather. Labor day has come and gone, which can only mean one thing: summer is quickly coming to an end and fall is right around the corner. Not only does this mean the seasons are changing and the temperature will soon be dropping (hopefully!), but it also means that we will have to begin transitioning our makeup to fit upcoming fall trends.

When summer hits, we all quickly reach for the bold and the bright; but now that fall is knocking on the door, we will be making a few easy adjustments. The good news? There’s no need to spend a ton of money to get these new looks; in fact, you can still use some of your favorite Blushington products throughout the switchover!

Blushington West Hollywood’s head makeup artist Jessica Scantlin has all the tips and tricks to help make the transition into fall as seamless as your makeup. Already a fan of Becca’s Shimmering Skin Protector? Fantastic! Scantlin swears by it, suggesting you “use it in the fall to give you a nice glow and to keep your skin looking healthy.” Not ready to give up the metallic detailing quite yet? You’re in luck. Scantlin says that metallics on the eyes are still in! “In the summer, we opted for more of light golds, and champagne colors, but in the winter, prep your lid with a darker shadow - and add the metals on top,” which works perfectly with Stila Metal Shadows. The perfect remedy to brighten up your lips, cheeks, and lids? Stick with Becca Beach Tints, a Blushington cult favorite! Lastly, for a healthy fall bronze, Scantlin suggests reaching for Girlactik’s matte bronzer in Casablanca since “it’s a subtle bronze color so it doesn’t look too harsh.”

There you have it, all the tools to keep you looking fresh faced for fall!

Meet Makeup’s New BFF!

We are thrilled to announce we are carrying Beauty Blender sponges in all three locations! Not only will we be applying these amazing products on all your amazing faces, but we will be retailing them as well!

It’s true what they say: good things come in small packages. We are thrilled to announce we are now carrying Beauty Blender sponges, the world’s first elliptically shaped, non-disposable, hi-definition cosmetic sponge applicator, in all three locations!

Simply put, flawless skin has never been easier than with the Beauty Blender. It’s like a little, pointy-shaped ball of makeup application bliss. Our artists are loving theirs, and use them particularly for seamless foundation and concealer application.

The BB is an expert in contouring and highlighting, as the pointed tip lets you blend makeup in hard-to-reach spots like around your nose and under your eyes. When put into the hands of our makeup pros, it’s truly a winning combination.

Here’s the inside scoop on how Blushington artists create their winning looks, brought to you by artist Brittany Spyksma. Try pairing your BB with Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint, plus Julie Hewett Omit Concealer for a signed, sealed and delivered perfect glow. Plus, add Jouer Tint in Peony for cheeks and lips as a finishing touch, and you’re ready to take on the day by storm.

Lovely Lilac Look

Orchid, lilac and lavender shades are popping up everywhere—eyes, lips, hair and nails. Want to rock purple makeup? The best way to tackle the trend is to focus the purple on your eyes and keep the rest of your makeup simple. This means using a very light base and just a flush of peach on the cheeks and lips. Here are our two favorite ways to incorporate purple into your look:

Liner. Smudge a purple eyeliner on the top and bottom of your lash line. We prefer Stila Smudge Stick in Purple Tang. It’s a great eyeliner that won’t budge in the summer heat!

Shadow. Bright purple might look hot on the catwalk, but for everyday opt for a subtle lavender. Our fave shadow shades are Parfait by Jouer (a deep, shimmering lavender) and Tone by Stila (a pinkish orchid). Sweep it across your lid and then top it off with lots of mascara for a fresh, springtime look.

Spring Shades

Color simply comes alive in spring—in the flowers, the fashion, and even in the makeup. You can easily pump up your look by just adding a little bit of color.

EYES: Add a touch of sapphire, teal, or emerald to your eyes. Stila has just come out with an array of new eyeliner colors and the greens and blues are to die for! Our pick: Smudgestick in either Cobalt or Mint Julep.

LIPS/CHEEKS: We’re loving the reddish-corals on lips and cheeks. Cheekie Lip and Cheek Shine by Julie Hewett in Peachie is a great cheek color to compliment Hydrating Lipstick by Jouer in Grace. Prefer a blushing berry tone instead? Try Tint by Jouer in Dahlia for your cheeks and then apply Lip Enhancer by Jouer in Shiraz on your lips for a soft, matching berry color.

NAILS: Look for mermaid-inspired hues for your nails. Try aquamarine colors such as Marc Jacobs Enamored Nail Glaze in Blue Velvet Blue, minty shades such as L'Oréal Nail Color in Mint Glacée and electric blue hues such as Ally by Julep.
